Grey Goo
Grey Goo is a Real-Time Strategy developed by Petroglyph Studios (formed by former Westwood employees, the Command & Conquer guys).
There’s three factions, with a fourth unplayable faction in the expansion. The Beta, The Humans, and the Goo. The campaigns go in that order.
I found the campaigns to be a bit disappointing. Usually RTS games find ways of doing mirror matches by having rogue elements or betrayals or something but there’s none of that here. In fact the plot is fairly straightforward and uninteresting. There’s no real choices in the campaign to make either.
The gameplay is pretty good though. The difference factions are fun in their own weird ways. At first I thought the Goo were like the Zerg but that’s not really true. They really function differently and are strange in their own right. Each faction has interesting weaknesses and strengths, and a small number of cool units to build and micro around.
The game really does have a sleek modern RTS vibe of its own. However, I do think there’s a lack of personality to the uniformly serious tone of the game. The orchestral-electronic music is great coming from Command & Conquer’s Frank Klepacki.
If you’re looking for a modern RTS that’s not Starcraft II, check out Grey Goo. It’s pretty cool.
